Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

Ever increasing pace of development in electronics, audio and video communications systems and the automation in industries have made an electronic engineer a catalyst for the change of the modern society. Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is a swiftly advancing field, with new ideas emerging every other second. With technology becoming all pervasive in everyday life, opportunities for electronic engineers are endless.

Considering the requirements, the department set up many laboratories in various areas of Electronics & Communication Engineering in order to provide a very good practical training to the students. These laboratories have been upgraded and modernized from time to time as per the curriculum requirements. The ECE Department has 7 laboratories:

  • Electron Devices & Circuits Laboratory

This is the main lab where the basic experiments like device characteristics and basic analog circuits are done. The lab consist of oscilloscopes, function generators and power supplies. Here the students carry out different experiments which includes the study of the characteristics of devices such as diodes, BJT, FET and basic amplifiers, oscillator, Waveform generator using electronic devices .These experiments are also performed by simulation using softwares like Orcad, Pspice,Multisim,Matlab and Xilinx.

  • Digital Electronics Laboratory

This laboratory provides hands-on experience in designing and implementation of digital logic circuits and systems. The laboratory experiments involve the design and testing of digital systems using small and medium scale integrated circuits. Each standard setup in the lab has basic trainer kits and IC Testers. Hardware descriptive programming language (VHDL) is used extensively for design, simulation, and verification.

  • Linear Integrated Circuits Laboratory

This lab is equipped with devices to conduct experiments in the realm of analog electronics. The standard setup in the lab contains basic and advanced trainer kits, oscilloscope, IC Testers and function generators. In addition to these experiments, different applications of timers, DAC, ADC are performed.

  • Microprocessor Laboratory

The laboratory is equipped with Microprocessor Trainer kits based on INTEL 8085, 8086 and Microcontroller kits based on INTEL 8051, 8059 along with interfacing peripheral devices such as 8279, 8251, and 8253. Added to this, Microprocessor based speed control of motors, PC based temperature control system, data acquisition system with software facilities such as Cross Assembler experiments are carried out.

  • Digital signal processing laboratory

This is a specialized laboratory meant for doing signal processing experiments. The signal processing tasks in hardware and software are being carried out here. The lab has more than 30 numbers of Pentium IV personal computers along with required software like MATLAB 7.1 version which is a user friendly tool for the students. The knowledge of MATLAB software enables the students to design a digital filter of required specifications.

  • Networks laboratory

The communication between two Computers is carried out through serial and parallel connection. The Local area Network simulator, WLAN Hardware and network simulator software, LAN Simulator is used to verify Ethernet LAN protocols, Token bus, Token ring protocols and WLAN protocols. Network simulator software is used to implement different error control codes like Stop and Wait, Go back-N and selective repeat protocols. It is also used to experiment Routing algorithms like Distance vector and Link state Routing, Data Encryption and Decryption. Transfer of files from PC to PC using Windows/Unix socket processing also can be done.

The labs offer opportunities for students to work on a wide range of advanced software packages that include:
MATLAB, Simulink, Toolboxes (Communication, Signal Processing, Image Processing) Blocksets (Communication, DSP, Wavelet CDMA basic reference)

  • Xilinx ISE 6.1
  • Real Time Kernel
  • p-spice Orcad
  • BIOS software
  • L SIM and N SIM.
The ECE Department has well qualified and highly experienced faculty members with considerable research and academic experience in the areas of specialization that include Communication systems, Embedded Systems, Applied Electronics and VLSI design. Students are given vast amount of practical exposure through the use of innovative methodologies in the design and development of electronics, which is the backbone for all engineering disciplines and also they gain benefit from the guest lecturers based on the latest innovations in both established and emerging fields.
